The Intellectual Property (IP) research unit of the CRIDS is primarily focused on copyright, neighbouring rights and the law of trademarks at the national and international (mostly EU) levels. The research unit is composed of academics, lawyers, junior and senior researchers which are not only IP specialists, but also have practical knowledge and training in information and communication technologies. This enables the unit to be highly specialised on the interactions of these fields of IP law with information and communication technologies. The research undertaken takes place in a multidisciplinary environment.

The rapid pace of technology development raises many questions on the sustainability of the existing IP legal framework and on how it could be adapted. In this context, the main research topics include: open data, open access, open licenses, Big Data, AI, blockchain, robotics, data economy, the liability and responsibilities of intermediaries, digital rights management, valorisation of public sector information, web archiving, etc. 

The IP research unit invests in both fundamental research and applied research and can provide concrete and pragmatic solutions to the issues raised while also carrying out fundamental theoretical analysis. For example, the CRIDS recently worked on research contracts related to the dissemination/commercialisation of decision-making tools based on data from both the public and private sectors to improve agricultural practices and on the corresponding IP concerns this could cause.

The unit organises and participates in many national and international conferences.
